Raising Estate Exemption in Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Some nonprofit organizations say Maryland's estate tax is driving their wealthy donors out of state during retirement. They support a new bill raising the estate tax exemption to $5.34 million per spouse.

House Speaker Michael Busch testified before the House Ways and Means Committee on this bill Wednesday. Miller filed the bill with dozens of co-sponsors.

The federal exemption is $5.34 million, and Maryland's is $1 million.

Delaware Wrapping Up State Budgets

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware legislative budget writers have approved $44.7 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, community groups and volunteer fire companies.

The spending plan approved by the Joint Finance Committee on Wednesday is $1.7 million higher than the $43 million recommended by Gov. Jack Markell in January.

The grants bill is the third and smallest budget bill that lawmakers pass each year, along with the operating budget and a capital budget for roads and construction projects.
