Armed Guards Placed in Indian River Schools

Armed security officers are now strolling the hallways in the Indian River School District.

The move follows the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown last year.

Most of them are former Delaware State troopers and will be present every minute of the school day at the 14 facilities in the district.

But there are some that don’t feel comfortable with guns being carried in the schools.

Billy Windgate of Selbyville told WBOC that that he does not believe firearms belong on school grounds.

MD House of Delegates Approves Gun Control Bill

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Maryland House of Delegates has approved a gun-control measure proposed by Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley.

The House voted 78-61 Wednesday for the bill.

It has a number of differences from a measure the Senate passed more than a month ago. The two chambers will have to work out the differences before the General Assembly adjourns at midnight Monday.

Pipe Drainage Project in Salisbury Set To Finish Jan. 15

Work near Isabella and Mill Streets for work to extend drainage pipes under the railroad track near the intersection is set the end on Jan. 15.


The Maryland State Highway Administration says the pipes have been laid, leaving only patching and resurfacing to be done.


The closure is the first 18-month phase of a drainage project that will improve and replace the underground piping to eliminate flooding in Newtown.

Queen Anne's County Police in Schools

CENTREVILLE, Md. (AP) - Police are doing extra patrols around schools in Queen Anne's County.


The Capital of Annapolis reports that officers with the Queen Anne's County Office of the Sheriff and the Centreville Police Department will continue the increased patrols this week. The patrols started after last month's shooting at a school in Newtown, Conn.


A Sheriff's Office spokesman says police presence isn't a response to any specific rumors or threats.
