The Indian River School District Superintendent Mark Steele says his students will get “slammed” under the state budget proposed by Governor John Carney.

He told the Wilmington News Journal that what would hurt the school system most is the decision to cut $22 million in the Education Sustainment budget.

Carney’s budget has also slashed $15 million from the school operating budgets.

For the district the cuts would amount to $1.7 million for the fiscal year of 2018.

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is returning to the state he once presided over as Lt. Governor.

He will be delivering the Commencement Speech tomorrow at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Steele was the first African American to be elected statewide in Maryland and subsequently made a failed senate bid.

During his time in the administration of Governor Bob Ehrlich he worked to reform the state’s Minority Business Enterprise program and championed charter schools in the state.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele says Penn National Gaming Inc. should "butt out" and stop spending millions to defeat gambling expansion in Maryland.

Steele, a former lieutenant governor of Maryland, and former Maryland Republican Party Chairwoman Audrey Scott expressed support for gambling expansion in a letter Tuesday. The ballot question they're backing would allow table games like blackjack and a casino in Prince George's County.
