WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A bag of human remains have been found in the scandal-plagued Delaware Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Kimberly Chandler, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Safety and Homeland Security, says the remains were found during the process of moving the now-shuttered medical examiner's office to the homeland security department's new Division of Forensic Science.

Lawmakers abolished the medical examiner's office after its chief was targeted in a criminal investigation and fired for misconduct amid an evidence-tampering scandal.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Corrections officials say an inmate at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington has died.

The Department of Correction says 41-year-old Michael Piunti died Thursday morning at St. Francis Hospital. Officials say Delaware State Police are investigating Piunti's death as an apparent suicide.

Piunti arrived at the jail on Sept. 1. Officials say he was being held in default of bail on charges of forgery and other offenses.

Piunti's body has been turned over to the Medical Examiner's Office.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Delaware prosecutors have dropped drug charges against a man accused of dealing heroin following testimony at a court hearing regarding an evidence-tampering and theft scandal at the state's drug testing lab.

The charges against 31-year-old Braaheim D. Reed were dropped Thursday morning before a judge resumed a hearing that could determine the fate of hundreds of other drug prosecutions in Delaware.

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Markell administration officials are proposing a reorganization of the Delaware medical examiner's office amid an evidence tampering scandal in the state drug-testing lab.

Officials proposed Wednesday that the ME's office be moved from the Department of Health and Social Services to the Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

The proposal was presented to a joint legislative committee as it resumed a hearing regarding problems at the drug-testing lab, which is part of the medical examiner's office and is the subject of a criminal investigation.
