Lane Closures This Week on Bay Bridge

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Maryland Transportation Authority says the two spans of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge will be closed this week for maintenance.

Last night the eastbound was closed from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday. During that time, two-way traffic was allowed on the westbound span.

For the rest of the week the westbound span is scheduled to be closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Michael Phelps' Alcohol Level Was .14

BALTIMORE (AP) - Police documents indicate that Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps registered .14 percent on a breathalyzer test after he was stopped on a speeding violation.

The legal limit for intoxication in Maryland is .08.

The statement of probable cause by the Maryland Transportation Authority police also says Phelps' eyes were red, bloodshot, and "his speech was mush mouth."

Warning: E-ZPass Scam in Maryland


BALTIMORE (AP) - Transportation officials in Maryland are warning the public about a scam involving E-ZPass.

The Maryland Transportation Authority on Wednesday warned that several phony emails are circulating requesting E-ZPass Maryland customers to pay their tolls debts online. Transportation officials say the emails are a scam, and that scammers are using the emails to try to obtain personal information. Transportation officials say the emails should be ignored or deleted.

Moving The Ospreys From Their Traffic Camera Perch


SANDY POINT, Md. (AP) - Maryland transportation officials say they're considering building a nesting platform for ospreys who insist on building and rebuilding nests in front of a traffic camera pointed at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

The Maryland Transportation Authority tweeted Wednesday that it is consulting with engineers about a platform after removing nests over Route 50 three times. Authority spokesman John Sales says officials got permission to move the nest from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The nest did not contain eggs or young birds.

Truck Inspections on Chesapeake Bay Bridge

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Police in Anne Arundel County are teaming with the Maryland Transportation Authority police to conduct commercial vehicle safety inspections to help keep unsafe vehicles off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

On Tuesday, both agencies began the joint initiative. Transportation Authority Officer Tom Goloski says some tractor-trailers reach the toll plaza with brakes out of adjustment, flat tires and missing lug nuts. So police are working to get such vehicles off the road before they cross the bridge.

Most of the vehicles inspected on Tuesday were safe.

Bay Bridge Is Safe, Maryland Officials Say

After two accidents within the last few days acting Executive Secretary for the Maryland Transportation Authority Bruce Gartner is reassuring motorists that the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is not dangerous.

But he did want to remind drivers that they should use caution and abide by the speed limits and their surroundings.

Triple A Mid-Atlantic has asked the National Safety Transportation Board to look into the strength of the railings on the bridge after a car plunged into the water.

Woman Survives Plunge from Bay Bridge

SANDY POINT, Md. (AP) - A Calvert County woman who survived a plunge off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge after a crash says she swam to safety after deciding she didn't want to die.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police say Morgan Lake's car was hit by a tractor trailer on Friday, sending it off the bridge and into the water 40 feet below.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Safe and Open

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland transportation officials have declared the Chesapeake Bay bridge safe for travel after unscheduled inspections that snarled morning commuter traffic.

The inspections forced the closure of the westbound span of the bridge Tuesday morning, resulting in huge traffic backups.

The westbound span was reopened to traffic at noon.

Officials said the westbound lanes of the bridge were closed Monday night after workers reported unusual vertical movement.

The Maryland Transportation Authority says that the westbound span will be closed for inspection.

The Authority says that there was unusual and slight vertical movement on the bridge last night.

Workers were ordered off the span.

Inspectors are set to go over the bridge during the light of day.

The eastbound span of the Bay Bridge will be open to two-way traffic.
