marijuana legalization

Supporters of decriminalizing marijuana rallied this weekend in Wilmington urging the Delaware General Assembly to act.

There were around 40 people who marched along Market Street with curious onlookers – some honking their horns others shouting support from apartment above the street.

Governor Jack Markell says he is willing to look at decriminalization.

But the Delaware Democrat strongly opposed legalization of the weed that has taken place in Colorado and other states.

He said not enough was known about its impact.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Gov. Martin O'Malley has signed his first bill of the year, expanding the state's pre-kindergarten program to another 1,600 children from low-income families.

The ceremony was held Tuesday, hours after the General Assembly session ended.

O'Malley included $4.3 million in next year's budget to fund the expansion, but it took an act of the legislature to put his plan in action.

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, who is running for governor, called the measure another step toward universal pre-K, a major theme of his campaign.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A state delegate who's running for governor is planning a rally with marijuana reform advocates before she urges other lawmakers to decriminalize the drug.

Del. Heather Mizeur, a Montgomery County Democrat, is the lead sponsor of a bill that would make pot possession a civil offense, punishable by a $100 fine instead of arrest. Offenders under age 21 would receive drug education.

Mizeur is also sponsoring a marijuana legalization bill.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown says Colorado and Washington state should be applauded for legalizing marijuana, but he wants to learn more about what happens in those states before supporting legalization in Maryland.

Brown, who is running for governor, talked about a variety of marijuana measures on Friday during a meeting with Baltimore lawmakers.
