Delaware Panel Recommends After Labor Day Start for Schools

A Delaware state Senate panel says that the school term should begin after Labor Day in September to bring the state in line with the busy summer season.

The later start is aimed at helping businesses keep employees as well as allow high school students to earn more money.

This would also encourage visitors to stay later in the summer.

Archie Kohr, owner of Archie’s ice cream shop in Rehoboth, told WBOC that he thinking having student through the Labor Day weekend would help the local economy.

After Labor Day School Start, Perhaps in Delaware

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A state task force set up to consider the feasibility of starting school after Labor Day is wrapping up its work.

Members of the task force were to vote Wednesday on whether to recommend whether state officials should delay the annual school starting date.

The task force was formed after state lawmakers passed a resolution last year calling for a study of the issue.

The resolution suggests that starting school after Labor Day could provide an economic boost to Delaware by extending the summer beach tourism season.

Tonight's UMES Concert Canceled, Worcester County to Begin School Year Early

Today’s rescheduled Homecoming concert at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has been suddenly canceled.

Justin Thompson, the student government president told WBOC, that the cancelation was due to concerns about a lack of security for the new date.

He said he was baffled by word from the public safety department that they could not provide enough security for the event.

University officials told the television station that the Maryland State Police do not discuss their security plans.

OC Skate Park, No Reduced Hours Expected

Ocean City officials may not reduce the hours that a skate park can be used.

A new report by the Parks and Recreation Department found that an average of 31 skaters per day use the Ocean Bowl Skate Park.

The report says there were more than 10-thousand visits to the facility last year generating over $55-thousand in revenue.

Last year, city council members considered closing the skate park during the week to save money. It would have gone into effect the Tuesday after Labor Day.

The facility would also have been open only on weekends.

A 3% Increase in Traffic Expected This Labor Day Weekend

AAA Mid-Atlantic expects 678-thousand Maryland travelors this Labor Day weekend.

That's a 3% increase over last year.

Spokesperson Christine Delise says, "The heaviest congestion is expected to be the Friday before the Labor Day holiday.' She adds that, "Not surprisingly Monday will be a very heavy traffic day as travelors head back home to school and work on Tuesday."

Franchot: Start School After Labor Day

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot says the public school year should being after Labor Day generating millions of dollars in state revenue and boosting the state’s economy.

During an appearance with local officials and business leaders in Ocean City yesterday, Franchot said, he best part of the proposal is that “it does not cost anything”.

The Board of Revenue Estimates says that it could increase direct economic activity by $74.3 million which includes $3.7 million in new wages.

Call to Study on Starting School After Labor Day in Delaware

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A Republican state senator is proposing legislation to study whether all Delaware public schools should wait until after Labor Day to start classes.

Sen. Gerald Hocker of Ocean View says the move could mean more money for Delawareans, particularly high school students with summer jobs.

Hocker says only two of Delaware's 19 public school districts, both in Sussex County, started classes after Labor Day last year.

Schools Could Start After Labor Day in Maryland

The Maryland school term  could start after Labor Day under legislation introduced by Senator Jim Mathias.

He said that starting later could not only help tourism in Ocean City but state parks in central and western Maryland as well as businesses in the Annapolis area.

The Eastern Shore Democrat’s bill would form a task force to study how moving that date would affect summer tourism the economy and education.

He was joined by co-sponsors Senators George Edwards from western Maryland and John Astle from Anne Arundel County.
