Del. Senator Pushes for Permanent Solution to Highway Funding

Senator Tom Carper says he wants a permanent fix to ensure that the nation’s Highway Trust Fund has plenty of money to take care of the country’s roadways.

Last year the Delaware Democrat opposed a temporary fix that kept the government from going over a fiscal cliff.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that this year he is introducing an amendment that would force Congress to provide a long-term solution before Christmas.

The Highway Trust Fund is set to become insolvent this summer if Congress does not act.

Andy Harris Votes No On Fiscal Cliff Bill

Eastern Shore Republican Andy Harris said no to the legislation approved by the House last night to avoid – what has become known -- as the fiscal cliff.

The 1st District Congressman joined outgoing Maryland Republican Roscoe Bartlett from the 6th Congressional District with the state’s remaining Democratic members voting in favor of the measure.

In a statement, Harris said he disagreed with the ratio of tax increases to spending cuts adding that measure raised taxes by $40 for every $1 dollar in spending reductions.

Fiscal Cliff Could Endanger Medicaid Expansion

Governor Jack Markell met with President Obama at the White House yesterday telling him that if a deal is not reached to avert the fiscal cliff the cuts in Medicaid would force states to rethink expansion of health care for the poor under Obamacare.

Markell is chair of the National Governors Association and led a six member delegation to meet with the nation’s chief executive.

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware Gov. Jack Markell is leading a group from the National Governors Association to meet with President Obama to discuss fiscal issues.

Markell, who is serving as chairman of the NGA, will be joined by members of its executive committee at Tuesday's White House meeting.

The governors will discuss the potential impact on their states under the "fiscal cliff" scenario, as well as potential solutions.

Delaware Group Tells Senators to Hike Taxes on Wealthy

NEWARK, Del. (AP) - A liberal advocacy group is urging members of Delaware's congressional delegation to support President Obama's call for higher taxes on wealthier Americans.

Americans for Democratic Action wants Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons to continue their support for allowing Bush-era tax cuts to expire on the top 2 percent of American households, those making over $250,000 a year.
