RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is helping raise money for the Democratic candidate in Virginia's closely watched race for governor.

An invitation obtained by The Associated Press says Clinton is the featured guest at a fundraiser for Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam in New York on Oct. 4.

Northam is facing Republican Ed Gillespie in one of only two off-year gubernatorial contests in November. The swing-state contest is viewed as a possible referendum on President Donald Trump's first year in office.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A group that mobilized black voters for Hillary Clinton plans spend more than $1 million in Virginia ahead of November's closely watched governor's race.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that the Black Progressive Action Coalition plans to spend $600,000 on voter education. An affiliated political action committee plans to spend $500,000 on mailers and digital ads.

The money will be spent on behalf of Democrats on the statewide ticket. That includes gubernatorial nominee Ralph Northam.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A restaurant owner in Maryland's state capital has defeated a longtime state senator in the Democratic mayoral primary in Annapolis.

Gavin Buckley, who's making his first run for public office, campaigned as a candidate with new ideas.

State Sen. John Astle, who has represented Annapolis in the state Senate for more than 20 years, conceded the race Tuesday night, less than an hour after poll close.

Incumbent Mayor Mike Pantelides cruised to victory over attorney Nevin Young in the Republican primary.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Former Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler says he will not run for governor.

Published reports quoted Gansler as saying he has no plans to enter the crowded Democratic primary for next year's election.

Gansler unsuccessfully ran against then-Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown in the 2014 Democratic primary for governor.

He is now a partner in the Washington law firm of Buckley Sandler. Gansler served eight years as Maryland's attorney general. He also was Montgomery County's state's attorney for eight years.

AP)- The two major party candidates in Virginia's closely watched race for governor argued over taxes, President Donald Trump and what the state should do with its numerous Confederate statues.

Republican Ed Gillespie said at a debate in Northern Virginia on Tuesday that he's the only candidate with a sense of urgency and the right policies, which include cutting taxes to improve the state's economy, which he said is floundering.

MCLEAN, Va. (AP) - The two major party candidates running to be the next governor of Virginia are set to square off at the their second debate.

Republican Ed Gillespie and Democrat Ralph Northam will met Tuesday evening at Capitol One's headquarters in Northern Virginia.

It's the second of three debates and is hosted by the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The city of Annapolis is holding its primary for voters to choose candidates for mayor and city council.

Annapolis Mayor Mike Pantelides is running against Nevin Young in the Republican primary on Tuesday. State Sen. John Astle and Gavin Buckley, an Annapolis small business owner, are running in the Democratic primary for mayor.

Voters also will be choosing candidates for the eight seats on the City Council in Annapolis, which is the state capital.

Polls open at 7 a.m. They close at 8 p.m.

The general election is Nov. 7.

TOWSON, Md. (AP) - Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz is joining Maryland's crowded race for governor.

The Baltimore Sun reports that he plans to officially make the announcement Monday morning. 

The 59-year-old Democrat has been county executive since December 2010. He told The Sun that he's created jobs, improved schools and protected the environment during his tenure. And he said he's done so without raising taxes.

The Democratic primary for governor is a crowded one for next year's election.

Saturday’s Dewey Beach elections saw incumbent Mayor Dale Cooke returned to office and was joined by newcomers on the town commission Paul Bauer and TJ Redefer.

Redefer and Bauer received the most votes with over 400 while Cooke who has been on the commission for a number of terms and is also Mayor got 399.

The two incumbents who lost were Diane Hansen and Jill Compello.

The elections come amidst allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination by the Town Manager Marc Appelbaum.

TOWSON, Md. (AP) - Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz has scheduled an announcement widely expected to be about his political future.

Kamenetz, a Democrat who has been weighing a run for governor, says he'll be making a special announcement in Towson on Monday.

Sean Naron, a campaign spokesman, declined to comment Sunday afternoon on the nature of the announcement.

Kamenetz has been county executive since December 2010.

The Democratic primary for governor is a crowded one for next year's election.
