DOVER, Del. (AP) - The recent confirmation of two flu-related deaths has brought Delaware's season total to 30, breaking the previous single-season record.

The Division of Public Health said in a release Monday that two women, aged 83 and 84, died in the last two weeks of February. Both women had multiple underlying health conditions.

The number of flu deaths recorded in the state's 2017-2018 flu season exceeds the 2014-2015's record of 28. This season's total of flu cases smashes last year's record of 4,554, coming in at 7,071.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit involving a Delaware prison inmate who died from a ruptured appendix.

19-year-old Raequan Stevens died in 2015 while being held in connection with an attempted robbery during which he was wounded and his brother fatally shot.

According to court records, Stevens allegedly reported to emergency sick call with severe abdominal pain and was returned to general population after being given a 400 milligram Motrin pill and two antacid tablets. He was found dead in his cell two days later.


A man has fallen to his death at the Indian River Power Plant near Millsboro.

Delaware State Police say the industrial accident occurred around 8 a.m. yesterday.

The victim’s body has been taken to the Delaware Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the death.

WBOC reports that an NRG company spokesman said that the victim was a contract worker and not a plant employee.

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Police in Delaware are investigating the deaths of a pedestrian who was hit by a car and his wife, whose body was found in their Dover apartment, where authorities went to notify her of his death.

Dover police said in a news release that early Monday, a man was struck and killed by a car when he walked into its path on U.S. Route 13. Officers say the pedestrian's car was found nearby with the engine running.

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) - Authorities are investigating after they say a Pennsylvania man died after falling from an eighth-floor balcony at an Ocean City hotel.

Ocean City police say in a statement that 29-year-old Jordan M. Hess of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, died shortly after crews arrived to the scene Saturday evening at the Stowaway Grand Hotel.

Officials believe the fall was accidental.

The medical examiner's office will determine Hess' official cause and manner of death.


Wilmington Police Chief Bobby Cummings says that he expects charges to be filed against those responsible for the death of 16 year old Amy Joyner-Francis in a restroom at Howard High School of Technology.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Cummings said he expected the case to be closed by the end of the week.

Cummings statements before around 100 people who gathered at town hall meeting last night at Stubbs Elementary School was the first time the chief had spoken out publicly on her death.

Police are reviewing a fight that took place inside the restroom.

Police say a 29 year old man has died from a single gunshot around 4 a.m. Sunday on North New St. in Dover.

Police say they found the body of David Clark on the sidewalk with a gunshot to his upper body.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that police say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The city police say they are continuing their investigation and said there was no additional information at this time.

MIDDLETOWN, Del. (AP) - New Castle County Police are investigating the death of a 20-year-old man.

Police responded to a Middletown home after getting a call around 2 a.m. Sunday. When officers arrived, they found people attempting life-saving efforts on the man. Paramedics took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the investigation into how the man died is in its preliminary stages.

BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore police have released videos showing the arrest of a man who died after his spine was nearly severed.

But none of them captured what happened inside the van where an arresting officer said he suffered a "medical emergency."

Deputy Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez says the officers involved have been suspended, and the autopsy shows that Freddie Gray "did suffer a significant spinal injury that led to his death."

Rodriguez said that a week later, investigators don't yet have any evidence showing what caused that injury.

A collision last night left one person dead in Salisbury.

The Maryland State Police say a two vehicle crash occurred on Route 50 westbound at Sixty Foot road.

Troopers say around 7:45 p.m. a Jeep Grand Cherokee heading east crossed Route 50 to go north on Sixty Foot road when it was hit on the passenger side by a Mazda.

WBOC reports that the accident resulted in the death of a 71-year old passenger from Rehoboth Beach.

He died at the scene.
