LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) - Authorities say a man who falsely claimed he had a bomb inside a carry-on bag at a Maryland airport has been taken into custody.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's office said says bomb squad technicians performed an X-ray of the bag at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport early Tuesday and saw what looked like a possible hand grenade device. Deputy State Fire Marshal Bruce Bouch said a robot was deployed and no device was found.

LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a man at an airport in Maryland after they said he carried in a loaded gun and extra bullets.

The Transportation Security Administration said in a statement Thursday that the man was caught at a security checkpoint at BWI Airport.

The TSA said the man told officials he forgot about the .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun. They said it was loaded with nine bullets and found in his backpack. He also had an extra magazine containing nine bullets.

The TSA did not identify the man but said he was from Laurel, Maryland.

BALTIMORE (AP) - A Maryland airport is now a location where travelers can apply for a program that grants them expedited screening at airports.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein says that Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has opened a TSA PreCheck application center.

PreCheck allows travelers enrolled in the program to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt and keep their laptop in its case and small liquids in a carry-on bag.

BALTIMORE (AP) - Officials say two Southwest planes landed safely at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport after the pilots were alerted to possible mechanical problems.

Southwest said in a statement that a Boston-bound flight had to return to BWI shortly after takeoff Monday because of a cockpit indication light.

Another Southwest flight had to be diverted to BWI Monday after the captain declared an emergency because of a cockpit indication light. That plane was heading from Philadelphia to Phoenix.

LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) - Authorities say four people were removed from a Chicago-bound flight at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport after a passenger reported suspicious behavior as the plane taxied to the runway.
 
Maryland Transportation Authority Police spokesman 1st Sgt. Jonathan Green said Tuesday that Spirit Airlines flight 969 was taxiing Tuesday morning when the crew decided to return to the gate. He says that the captain asked police to remove three men and a woman from the plane and that police are investigating.

LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) - Southwest Airlines is launching three international routes from Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

Service for flights to Aruba, Montego Bay and Nassau will shift Tuesday from AirTran Airways to Southwest.

Paul Wiedefeld, chief executive officer for BWI Marshall, says it marks an important first step as Southwest official makes the move to the international market. He says the airport looks forward to working with Southwest in coming years as the airline grows its international service.

LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) - Authorities say a Virginia man was arrested at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport after a loaded handgun was found in his carry-on bag at a security checkpoint.

The Transportation Security Administration announced Tuesday that the man was stopped Sunday afternoon when an officer staffing the X-ray machine spotted the gun in the bag of a man ticketed to fly to Salt Lake City. TSA says the gun was loaded with seven rounds with one in the chamber.
