At 11:05 pm last night a Black Brant XII suborbital rocket successfully launched the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility.

The Experiment will study the first stars and galaxies and how they were formed in the universe.

The rocket lifted the payload to an altitude of around 358 miles above the Atlantic Ocean.

The height will allow a longer observation time for the instruments.

The payload will eventually splash down into the Atlantic Ocean more than 400 miles from the Virginia Coast but will not be recovered.

The launch of the Black Brant XII rocket that will take a look at how the first galaxy was formed has been delayed until this evening to around 11 pm tonight at the Wallops Flight Facility.

The suborbital rocket had been set to be launched last night but there was not enough time to cool the instruments on the payload before launch.

The Cosmic Infrared ExperRiment will study the first stars and how galaxies formed in the universe.

The NASA Center will begin allowing the public in at around 9:30 pm to view the launch.

WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. (AP) - A rocket set to be launched from Virginia's Wallops Island Flight Facility will study how the first galaxy was formed.

NASA says the Black Brant XII suborbital rocket carrying the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment - or CIBER - is scheduled to be launched June 4.

CIBER will study when the first stars and galaxies formed in the universe and how brightly they burned their nuclear fuel. CIBER principal investigator Jamie Bock says the experiment is of "fundamental importance to astrophysics."
