Middle School Student Believed to Have Ingested Heroin at Dance

A student at Selbyville Middle School apparently was taken by an ambulance from a school dance on Halloween because it was believed he had ingested heroin in a bathroom.

An Indian River School District official told the Wilmington News Journal that only one student was involved and that he did not inject the substance with a needle.

Spokesman David Maull said that the emergency responders showed up at the scene after receiving a 911 call and took the student Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

18-Year Old Drowns in Ocean City

An 18-year old swimmer has drowned in Ocean City yesterday after he got caught in a rip current and was pulled under by a wave.

Witnesses say the victim appeared to be having difficulty getting back to shore and at one point was overtaken by a wave and failed to resurface.

First responders immediate arrived at the area near the Inlet after 6 p.m. and found the victim 13 minutes after the initial call.

WBOC reports that victim was treated on the scene by EMS personnel and then taken to Atlantic General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Atlantic General Hospital Adds Staff

Some hospitals may be laying off staff but not Atlantic General in Berlin.

With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, hospital CEO Michael Franklin told WBOC, that the facility has spent the last three years creating a safety net.

He said the hospital has gotten grants to offset increased costs and hired more nurses to take care of patients.

Franklin says the hospital has also been facing increasing cost of Medicare losing about a quarter of million dollars per quarter.
