WSCL 89.5 Christmas Day Specials

11AM- Caroling with the Singers

This magical season rings with music and song like none other. Over the past month, public radio listeners from around the country have gone to YourClassical.org to vote for their favorite Christmas carols. The results are in, and with them, we'd like to invite you to a nationwide caroling sing-along — whether you're solo, or with colleagues, friends or family.

Noon- Radio Live! A Christmas Carol.

Encore performance of Salisbury University's own production of the Dickens Classic.

1PM- Christmas at the Movies

The Christmas holiday is charged with nostalgia and hope, so a Christmas setting can effectively heighten the emotional power of any film. There have been many Christmas scenes in movies, and host David Garland unwraps some of the accompanying music for them.

2PM  A Handel and Haydn Society Christmas

Celebrate the season with this hour-long special featuring Christmas choral music from America’s oldest continuously performing ensemble, Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society.  Founded in 1815, the Society is celebrating their bicentennial season, including their 400th performance of Handel’s “Messiah.”  Join Host Cale Wiggins for this program featuring music from the 15th century to the late 20th ; a Christmas for all times.

3PM- A Rose in Winter: A Garden of Medieval and Renaissance Music for the Nativity.

Amidst familiar stories of wise men and shepherds, ancient Christmas legends also describe a midnight blooming of all manner of plants, trees, and flowers. The acclaimed vocal ensemble’s holiday concert explores this miracle of new life amid the cold of winter through gorgeous music honoring the Madonna and Child. Features choral works by William Byrd and Jean Mouton, medieval English ballads, Spanish cantigas, and the beloved German carol, “Es ist ein Rose Entsprugen.”

Chris Ranck is Delmarva Public Media's Executive Producer, Program Director and Automation Engineer.
