ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Implementation of the Common Core State Standards has been rocky and uneven across Maryland, and state officials want a new workgroup that would take a closer look at each district's needs.
Del. Eric Luedtke, a Montgomery County Democrat who teaches middle school, explained the need to his colleagues in the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday.
Some schools are poorly positioned to administer standardized tests online and teach students computer skills. Some also need help preparing teachers for the new standards, Luedtke said.
The 16-member workgroup would make budget and policy recommendations.
Betty Weller, president of the Maryland State Education Association, called the bill "absolutely essential."
Two parents who generally oppose Common Core testified against the bill.
Luedtke argued that complaints about Common Core result from implementation problems.
