The warden of the Worcester County Jail has died.

57-year old Gary Mumford has been in the post since 2011 after eleven years as assistant warden.

He replaced Warden Ira Shockely who retired.

A statement issued by local officials said that he died on Saturday after a short illness.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that he was instrumental in getting the facility the Recognition of Achievement Award from the Maryland Commission on correction Standards for the last 14 years.

Mumford was also a member of the Atlantic General Hospital Board of directors and a former member of the Worcester County Board of Education.
