Wind Chill Advisory Tonight, Expect More Cold Through the Week

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for Delmarva that begins at 9 p.m. tonight and runs through 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.

The wind chill values are expected to drop from minus 5 to minus 10.

Residents are encouraged to stay inside to reduce the danger of frost bite or hypothermia.

Code Purple

The Milford police department has issued a Code Purple alert that will run through January 11th.

Local officials say that morning leave will be in effect for each day at 7 a.m.

Sanctuaries that include churches and community centers are expected to be closed by January 12th.

Forecast

Today, it should be mostly cloudy with some sun. Windy and cold with the highs in the upper 20’s. West winds of 15 to 20 mph increasing to 25 to 30 mph by the afternoon.

Tonight, expect it to be clear, windy and cold with the lows around 11 degrees. There should also be northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph decreasing to 15 to 25 mph after midnight. Gusts could reach as high as 45 mph. Wind chill values as low as 6 below after midnight.

Thursday, it should be sunny, brisk and cold with highs in the lower 20’s. Expect west winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph. Wind chill values as low as 6 below in the morning.  

Thursday night, partly cloudy and cold with the lows around 17 degrees and southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph with gust as high as 25 mph.

Delaware Sees Snow

The season’s first winter weather left Delaware covered with snow and a few crashes yesterday.

And the First State is expected to see temperatures below freezing through the weekend.

The National Weather Service is warning that brisk wind and cold temperatures could produce wind chills below zero tonight and tomorrow.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that around 2 inches of snow fell in New Castle County with police responding to 15 crashes.

One included an injury.

There were also nine crashes in Kent County and one in Sussex County.
