WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington officials say a police officer shot in the face needs surgery but appears to have escaped life-threatening injuries.

The officer, Justin Wilkers, was shot Sunday afternoon after a traffic stop and chase in Southbridge. The three-year member of the department is in serious but stable condition at Christiana Care Hospital.

Police believe multiple people were involved in the shooting, and are investigating it along with state and federal authorities.

Mayor Dennis Williams says the shooting won't be tolerated and citizens of Wilmington will live in peace. He says he's committed to "ridding our city of anyone who threatens the safety of our neighborhoods."
