Margaret Guy

The shooting of 6-year-old boy and his mother in Wilmington has brought out community leaders as police search for the gunman.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Jashawn was talking with his mother Shaylynn Banner when bullets struck SUV she was driving.

His aunt Daylynn Banner said that the boy was struck three times including in the head.

His mother was hit once.

Daylynn told the Wilmington News Journal that she was at a loss for words that this would happen to her family.

The paper reports that a prayer circle was formed at Sixth and Spruce streets for Jashawn.

The Reverend Christopher Bullock, pastor of Canaan Baptist Church, said the violence was unacceptable and called black on black crime a deadly disease that is eroding the moral fabric of the community.

Meanwhile, Mayor Mike Purzycki urged people to think about what is good about the community and to build on the tragedy.

One resident said the gathering was to pray for “a healing of the little boy.”
