WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington officials are considering a program to place smart parking meters downtown that would allow visitors to pay with credit cards.
Councilwoman Hanifa Shabazz, who represents downtown, tells The News Journal the pilot program would include 200 smart meters. The technology could include a smartphone app that would alert customers when their meter is about to expire. They could then add time remotely.
Shabazz says the city doesn't want $40 parking tickets to discourage people from coming downtown.
The yearlong program would cost $179,340, under a contract with a Milwaukee-based parking vendor. The City Council must approve the contract to move forward.
