Wicomico County Executive Urges Caution on Poultry Regulations

Don Rush

Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver has issued a statement to reassure local residents about the large poultry operation planned for the Naylor Mill Road area.

Culver said that many of the statements at public meetings and in the media have been “less than accurate”.

But he added that he did have concerns about the issue and would reach out to experts who are charged with the responsibility of protecting public health and the environment.

Culver said that he has invited the Secretaries of the Maryland Department of the Environment, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for a local meeting to share their knowledge.

He warned that until all the information can be compiled on the issue it would be a mistake to legislate any new restrictions on the poultry industry.

Meanwhile, Wicomico County Council President John Cannon has said that he is interest in placing further restrictions on the poultry industry…with an eye to regulations that have been proposed by a local trade organization.

Other jurisdictions such as Accomack County and Somerset County have been involved in imposing further restrictions on large poultry operations.
