Washington Sequester Hits Delmarva

Delaware Federal Court

The US District Court in Delaware could soon be paring down the number of cases it hears as it braces for the federal spending cuts resulting from the $85 billion sequester from Washington.

The near shutdown of the federal court one day a week is set to go into effect in May.

It should last until September 20th.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Chief district Judge Gregory Sleet said this is an attempt to make it easier for federal prosecutors, federal public defenders and US Marshals to schedule mandatory furloughs for employees.

The mandatory federal cuts would force the public defender’s office to have 20 unpaid days off during that time while federal prosecutor and staff would be required to take off 14 days without pay.

Meanwhile, the US Marshal’s office expects its employees to take at least 11 furlough days.

Easton Airport

Officials at the Easton Airport say they’re concerned about potential cutbacks by the FAA under the sequester that cuts $85 billion in federal spending by the end of the fiscal year.

Easton Airport Manager Mike Henry told WBOC that the current plan the tower controllers would have to be let go.

The local airport deals with nearly 50-thousand operations a year including aircraft ranging from small planes and large corporate jets to military planes and helicopters.

Officials say the facility costs a half a million a year to operate.
