Nick Purnell is out as coach for the Washington High School Jaguars basketball team.
Over four seasons Purnell had a 70-to record.
Purnell told the Salisbury Daily Times that he did not resign.
Rather, he told the paper, that someone in the school system had expressed an interest in the position and “they decided to take that route.”
The high school’s athletic director Danny Lamb did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment from the Daily Times.
Purnell’s record as the boys’ basketball coach in the Bayside Conference has been highly successful.
He told the paper that it was all a surprise to him when he found on yesterday.
This follows the departure of Erica Henderson as head of field hockey at the school.
Teresa West is filling in on an interim basis.
