Wallops Looks Forward to ISS Resupply Missions

nasa.gov

The Wallops Flight Facility had a successful launch this week with the sounding rocket that went vapors into space to track the motion of particles more than a 100 miles above the earth's surface.

But the spaceport is gearing up for a set of more impressive launches -- the missions to resupply the International Space Station.

Kurt Eberly, vice president of Orbital ATK Antares, said there is a contract for a total of ten resupply missions.

He adds, "One of the things the we realized was how happy the astronauts were when we took away the trash. You can imagine if you were living in a big tent with five of your friends and the toilet was inside the tent you'd be excited when the trash truck came."

The next resupply mission is set for September and Wallops has two Antares rockets on site for a launch.

Eberly said that with all the activity at the facility from sounding rockets to the balloon program, it has become popular with the public.

He said, "It's really exciting to launch rockets from Virginia. I live in Arlington. I have two kids and they love to come down and see the rocket launches. I think everybody gets excited."
