WASHINGTON (AP) - Donald Trump's presidential campaign has fired its Virginia chairman after he led a protest at GOP headquarters complaining that the party establishment was undercutting its nominee.
At a protest Monday outside Republican National Committee headquarters, Corey Stewart referred to the Republican establishment as "pukes" who were thwarting Trump by reallocating campaign funds to congressional races instead of the presidential campaign.
Stewart, who also chairs the board of supervisors in Prince William County, said Monday he learned of his dismissal from media reports. He said he was willing to sacrifice his job with the Trump campaign to make the point that the GOP establishment is alienating the grassroots activists who support Trump.
John Fredericks, the spokesman for Trump's campaign in Virginia, said Stewart's protest was divisive and unhelpful at this stage in the campaign.
