RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia law enforcement officials will be on the lookout for drunken drivers this holiday weekend.
Officials say law enforcement members in the state will conduct about 140 sobriety checkpoints over Labor Day weekend. They will also be performing 530 saturation patrols, which are concentrated enforcement efforts aimed at cracking down on impaired driving.
Brian Moran is Virginia's Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security. He says in a statement that 40 percent of fatal crashes in the U.S. over Labor Day weekend involve alcohol-impaired drivers.
Officials anticipate that nearly 1 million Virginians will travel this weekend and most of them will be driving.
