MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say a Cessna pilot escaped injury when his plane crashed on the runway in Martinsville.

The agency said in a news release that the single engine aircraft crashed about 4:10 p.m. Monday at the Martinsville/Henry County Memorial Hospital Airport.

Troopers say the pilot was landing the plane when it pulled to the left. Officers say the pilot applied the brake, and the plane's landing gear failed. The pilot was not hurt and troopers were not told there were passengers.

Police say the runway was closed so the plane can be removed. Federal authorities are investigating the crash.
