RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia school board says it will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review a lower court decision allowing a transgender student to use the boys' restrooms at his school.
The Gloucester County School Board divulged its plans in papers filed Tuesday with the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, calling the case "one of national significance." The full appeals court last week refused to reconsider a 2-1 panel decision in favor of 16-year-old Gavin Grimm. The decision is now on hold until the Supreme Court decides whether to take the case.
Grimm's case has been closely watched since North Carolina enacted a law banning transgender people from using public restrooms that correspond to their gender identity. Several cases over the law are pending in federal courts in North Carolina.
