NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Two people are dead after a small airplane crashed in Norfolk Botanical Garden while approaching the airport for a landing.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya says in a news release that searchers found the plane around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday in the garden's Enchanted Forest Section.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Nate Littlejohn tells media outlets that the plane was one or two miles away from Norfolk International Airport when the tower lost contact around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Anaya says state police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.

A notice posted on the garden's website says it is closed to the public until further notice. The Enchanted Forest is on a peninsula on the 155-acre garden's northern end.
