RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Dominion Virginia Power is seeking state approval to dump millions of gallons of treated coal ash wastewater daily from two power plants into the James River and tributaries of the Potomac River.
The proposed releases are opposed by environmental and river protection groups, as well as some legislators.
They contend a draft permit issued by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is deeply flawed. They are seeking a number of measures, including more stringent limits on toxic metals and pollutants. They also want more time for the public to comment on the proposal.
In response, Dominion is defending its so-called dewatering plan. The company says it would follow rules established by the DEQ and prefers no delays.
The second of two hearings on the proposal is scheduled Tuesday in Woodbridge.
