MCHENRY, Md. (AP) - Some of the world's top whitewater paddlers are starting their final training in western Maryland for the Canoe Slalom World Championships to be held there later this month.

The training sessions at the Adventure Sports Center International in McHenry begin Wednesday and continue through Sept. 16. The competition is scheduled Sept. 17-21.

The championships are the most prestigious event to be held at the center since it opened in 2007.

The event comes 25 years after the Whitewater World Championships were held on the nearby Savage River in 1989.
