official photos

Senator Chris Coons and Congressman John Carney joined the sit-in last night on the House floor where congressional Democrats protested the failure of Speaker Paul Ryan to bring a gun control measure to a vote.

Congressman John Lewis, a legend of the Civil Right era, led the protest urging a vote on measures that would expand background checks and keep some suspected terrorists from obtaining firearms.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Carney who is running for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination said that he strongly supported Lewis’s efforts.

Meanwhile, fellow Democrat Chris Coons said send out a Tweet saying it was time for Congress to show it can act against gun violence.

The gun measures follow the mass shooting at an Orlando, Florida gay nightclub in which 49 died and over 50 others were injured.

The shooter Omar Mateen claimed allegiance to ISIS during the shootout with police.

State Senator Robert Marshall (D-De)

Surprise Bill in Delaware Senate

A measure in the Delaware Senate that would have kept those who show up on a federal terrorist or no-fly list was tabled.

The surprise measure was sponsored by Senator Robert Marshall and was originally an amendment to a House measure that extended the waiting period for background checks to allow the FBI more time to check out the gun buyer.

That measure was signed into law by Governor Jack Markell.

The Wilmington news Journal reports that Marshall said criticized his colleagues for making up excuses as to why people on the no-fly or terrorist watch lists       should be able to buy a firearm.
