ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Del. Don Dwyer, who pleaded guilty last year to boating while drunk, has introduced two bills to tighten penalties on state officials convicted of crimes like his own.
Dwyer is serving a 60-day jail sentence on weekends, and he completed a 28-day inpatient rehab stint. One of his new bills would make both of these penalties mandatory minimums for the governor, lieutenant governor, and any legislator, sheriff, or state's attorney convicted of DUI.
Dwyer told WBAL in Baltimore that he benefited from rehab and has remained sober since his release. He wants to make sure others receive the same "privileges."
Dwyer's other bill amends the state constitution to automatically suspend any member of the General Assembly serving jail time.
Dwyer's boating accident in August 2012 injured seven people.
