DOVER, Del. (AP) - A committee formed by state lawmakers to develop a new compensation system for Delaware's public school teachers is having its first meeting.
Gov. Jack Markell is scheduled to attend Wednesday evening's inaugural meeting of the Committee to Advance Educator Compensation and Careers at the Tatnall Building in Dover.
The legislation establishing the committee requires changes in how Delaware teachers are paid, including higher starting salaries. The bill also calls for educators to be given chances to earn more for demonstrating effectiveness and for taking on leadership roles, particularly in high-need schools.
The committee, which includes two representatives of the state teachers union, must submit its plan by Nov. 15 for consideration to be included in the governor's recommended budget for next year.
