The Sussex Council has decided to change its practice of reciting the Lord’s Prayer at the beginning of its meetings.
By a 3-to-2 vote the majority decided yesterday to have the Council President read the rotation of a non-sectarian prayer each week but that would also include the Lord’s Prayer.
Recently, a federal court judge ruled that plaintiffs would probably win a case barring the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer and urged the county to negotiate another policy on the prayer.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that both sides have agreed to mediation.
And Judge Leonard Stark gave the county until Friday to comply with his preliminary injunction to halt the practice of reciting the Lord’s Prayer.
This would end a 40 year tradition.
