Suspect Killed, Officer Wounded in Delaware

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A Delaware state trooper has been hospitalized after a gun battle with a Milford man who reportedly tried to strngle his girlfriend. The suspect is dead.

Authorities said troopers were called to a Magnolia home about 12:3 a.m. Wednesday about a fight between a woman and her boyfriend.

A trooper spotted 29-year old Dennis Hicks on  Route 1 around 7 a.m. After a car chase ending in Magnolia, Hicks got out of his car with a handgun and began shooting at 26-year-old Cpl. Lloyd McCann, who returned fire. 

Hicks was shot in the upper body and pronounced dead at a Dover hospital at 8:47 a.m.

McCann, a four-year veteran, was shot in the face and hand. He was flown to Christiana hospital in Newark, wher ehe was in serious but stable condition.
