ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) - Howard County school officials have disciplined a student who displayed a Confederate flag at a high school football game.
Schools spokeswoman Rebecca Amani-Dove declined to specify how the Glenelg High School student was disciplined following the Friday incident.
She says displaying the Confederate flag isn't illegal, but school administrators can take action against "anything that causes disruption."
The Washington Postreports that the student unfurled the flag while standing at the top of the bleachers during the school's football season opener against River Hill High School.
The incident prompted school officials to send letters to parents at both schools and drew the attention of Howard County Executive Ken Ulman. He said in a Facebook post that students need to understand that it's a hurtful symbol of hate to many.
