State Funds to Cut Bay and River Pollution in Wicomico County

Don Rush

Wicomico County got a $545-thousand dollars this week from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to cut its pollution into the Chesapeake Bay and major waterways.

The county is taking aim at five county-owned sites with 8 pollution-reducing projects to reduce the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and sediments that flow into the Bay and the rivers.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that Lee Beauchamp, the county’s director of Public Works, says officials are still working out the logistics and funding.

This is in addition to the $200-thousand the state gave out last year.

$71-thousand of the money will go toward two projects at Shumaker Park which will be sent out for bid this summer.

Beauchamp said the $46-thousand dollars will go toward building a bioretention system at the park which will filter and treat water before it goes into Shumaker Pond.

Another $25-thousand will create a regenerative storm water conveyance.
