The Maryland State auditor says that the Marydel Volunteer Fire Company has not been able to account for $30-thousand in cash withdrawals in a recent one year period.
In addition, the auditor found it paid thousands to a catering service that was owned by its chief.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that Auditor Tom Wagner could not find documentation that the money paid to the chief’s business was legitimate.
The paper reports the audit found that the Chief Buffy Madden and his wife, Denise, the company’s treasurer, had gone around internal financial controls and failed to safeguard funds.
The Marydel Fire Company got almost $120-thousand from the state’s grant-in-aid budget last year.
