Somerset County school officials would cut 19 positions under a proposed $32.2 million budget for the 2013 fiscal year as the district faces funding cuts from state and federal governments.
In addition, the Air Force ROTC program at Washington High School is expected to be moved to the J. M. Tawes Technology & Career Center in Westover so that Crisfield High School students can also participate.
School officials have asked the Somerset County Commissioners keep their funding the same as last year at $8.6 million.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that Superintendent Marjorie Miles warned that the situation could be even worse if the state does not find revenue to close a $500 million budget deficit.
Governor Martin O’Malley and top Maryland legislative leaders have agreed to hold a special session to come up with new revenues to avoid a “Dooms Day” budget of spending cuts.
