Snow Storm Hits Delmarva (Update)

Don Rush

Snow and more snow.

It’s the white stuff outside after Delmarva was struck by high winds and cold temperatures.

The Delaware Emergency Management Agency says Kent and Sussex county roads are snow covered and 3 inches to 5 inches of snow fell in some locations in Sussex County.

Department of Transportation crews are plowing roads statewide.

Maryland's State Highway Administration says crews are plowing and salting in southern Maryland and on the Eastern Shore, where some spots got 4 inches to 6 inches of snow. Roads in the Washington and Baltimore areas are mostly clear of snow.

A snow emergency has been issued for Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot and Worcester counties on the Maryland Eastern Shore.

Most school districts in Delaware and on Maryland's Eastern Shore are closed and state government offices in Delaware's Kent and Sussex counties are opening late after snowfall overnight.

The snow is expected to taper off by 8 a.m. this morning with sunnier skies and a high of 29 degrees.

But, the below freezing temperatures are expected to stick around until Saturday.

Officials all over Delmarva are warning of icy roadways.

KENT NARROWS, Md. (AP) - This winter's chilly weather has crews breaking up ice on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries for the first time in years.

The Department of Natural Resources' John Gallagher says this is likely the most ice Maryland has had in at least five years. Crews started breaking up ice Wednesday around Kent Narrows to keep the waterway accessible. The freezing weather has created ice about 6 inches thick.

The state has four boats available to break up ice. They are kept near Smith Island, Annapolis, Cambridge and Kent Narrows.

Officials say clearing ice-clogged waterways ensures first responders can provide assistance and allows watermen to maintain their business. It also allows fuel boats to reach Salisbury and Smith Island and marine builders to move barges to job sites.
