Skipjack Annual Race Takes Place Today Off Deal Island

Skipjack,msa.md.gov

The Deal Island Skipjack races get underway today.

The competition of these traditional Chesapeake Bay vessels is expected to see around a dozen ships.

One that won’t be in the water this year is the Kathryn.

Last year, it took on water and its captain Stoney Whitelock has been refurbishing it ever since.

The winner last year was the Rebecca T. Ruark.

The event draws hundreds of residents around the bay who keep the last sail powered working vessel alive.
