Shooting In New Castle Park

NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - New Castle County police say they are investigating the fatal shooting of a 25-year-old man in a park and that a suspect has been taken into custody.

Police say officials were called to Wilton Park for a person who had been shot about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Emergency responders found a man suffering from a gunshot wound and performed CPR. The man was then taken to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was identified as Benny Merrell of Newark.

Police say the suspect was taken into custody in the area of Route 273 and Appleby Road. Authorities say he was seen approaching the passenger side of a vehicle in the Villas Apartment complex before he was apprehended.
