HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - Lawyers are announcing a $1.2 million settlement with the NCAA and other defendants in a wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the 2011 death of a Frostburg State University football player.
Attorney Kenneth McClain said in a statement Monday that the deal with the parents of Derek Sheely is a landmark settlement that puts the NCAA and other football stakeholders on notice of their obligation to protect the health and safety of athletes.
The senior fullback from Germantown died from a head injury he suffered in practice. The school, the NCAA and the maker and retailer of the helmet Sheely wore had denied allegations of negligence.
The money will be paid to the Derek Sheely Foundation, established by Derek's parents Ken and Kristen Sheely.
