Sequester Expected to Hit Delaware Hard

nps.gov

As the deadline looms for the $85 billion in automatic spending cuts from the sequester in Washington the First State could be hit hard.

Delaware gets almost $315 million in non-defense funds from the federal government.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the state’s Office of Management and Budget believes there will be a 5.3 percent across-the-board cut.

The Delaware State Housing Authority gets $16 million in federal funding or about 15 to 20 percent of its funding.

The Authority says it does not expect furloughs or layoffs but adds services will be reduced.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor also receives federal funds that goes for a number of resources for those seeking jobs and job training.

Renee Roberson, area operations manager for the Delaware Department of Labor’s Georgetown office, told WBOC that more than 1-thousand people come into the office for job help every month.
