FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine is heading to hallowed ground in Virginia to learn more about federal funding to preserve Civil War battlefields.

The Democrat says he'll visit Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park on Friday to get a briefing on more than $1.2 million in funding from the American Battlefield Protection Program. Championed by Kaine, the program helps preserve Civil War battlefields at risk of being lost to development.

The Fredericksburg area is ground zero for Civil War battlefields in Virginia, where most of the war was fought.

The park encompasses four major battlefields. More than 100,000 Americans were killed, wounded or captured during those battles.
