Senator Chris Coons Backs Iran Nuclear Deal, President Nears Needed Votes

official website

Senator Chris Coons is a yes vote for the nuclear agreement with Iran.

The Delaware Democrat said that he was convinced the deal puts the world on a path that would limit Iran’s nuclear program for the next 15 years.

He added that despite flaws this was a better strategy for containing the spread of nuclear weapons.

His decision comes despite a barrage of television ads from opponents of the deal in which they quoted the senator’s doubts about the agreement.

Delaware’s other senator Tom Carper has already come out in support of the deal in an op-ed for the Wilmington News Journal.

In Pennsylvania, Senator Bob Casey added his support … calling the agreement the best way to constrain Iran’s nuclear program.

These two senators bring the total support in the senate for the deal to 33 – one vote short of the number President Obama needs to sustain a veto…if congress rejects the agreement.

Meanwhile, Maryland Senator Ben Cardin predicted the president would get the 34 votes.
