Sen. Mathias Speaks Out on Vetoed School Construction Measure

official photo

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has vetoed a measure that would have shifted oversight for school construction away from the Board of Public Works.

It would have created a new commission that would have been made up of appointees from the Republican governor and the two Democratic Legislative leaders.

The Salisbury Daily Times report that Delegate Maggie McIntosh added amendment to a bill that would provide $400 million for annual public school construction.

Under the amendment five members would be appointed by the governor to the new commission and House Speaker Michael Busch and Senate President Mike Miller would appoint two each.

Hogan attacked the measure calling the proposed commission a corrupted process.

But Senate President Miller said it was about putting money where it was needed.

Meanwhile, McIntosh told Capital News Service that it is also a direct reaction to Comptroller Peter Franchot’s actions involving local matters including the air conditioning and heating issues at some schools.

Delmarva Public Radio’s Don Rush spoke with state Senator Jim Mathias (D-MD) about his vote to support the change.
