PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a 50-year-old captain of a fishing vessel who apparently fell overboard east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Crew from the 31-foot boat called the Coast Guard on Sunday to report Richard Nee missing. The boat was anchored south of Fisherman's Island near the entrance of the Chesapeake Bay.

Crew members said they believed Nee fell overboard while they were sleeping late Saturday or early Sunday.

By sea and air, Coast Guard crews searched for a total of approximately 55 hours and covered more than 700 miles.

Crews with Virginia Marine Resources Commission and the Virginia Port Authority Maritime Incident Response Team, among others, also joined the search.

The search was suspended Tuesday.
