Schwartzkopf Retains House Leadership in Delaware

DOVER, Del. (AP) - State House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf of Rehoboth has retained his leadership post among majority Democrats in the chamber, with a slightly smaller caucus to oversee.

In a closed-door meeting Monday night, House Democrats also voted to keep Majority Leader Valerie Longhurst and Majority Whip John Viola in their posts.

Schwartzkopf, who must still be confirmed as speaker by a simple majority vote by the entire House, says the most important tasks for lawmakers is growing the middle class by creating jobs.

He suggested that one way to help business owners hire more workers is to look at the regulatory framework they face.

Democrats still control both chambers of the General Assembly but lost two House seats and one Senate seat in this month's legislative elections.
